Little Kids Rock conceived a new school music program called Modern Band. It teaches kids to perform, improvise and compose using the popular styles that they know and love including rock, pop, rap, R&B, and other contemporary styles as they emerge. Modern Band classes feature the instruments needed to play the material including guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, vocals, and technology / computers.

Our Modern Band programs leverage the cultural capital of the children we serve. They also expand upon existing music programming and serve as an equal music education option to Marching Band, Jazz Band and Chorus, making music available to children who might otherwise not participate in traditional music classes.

A number of our partner districts, including the nation’s two largest public school systems in the country, the New York City Department of Education and the Los Angeles Unified School District have officially adopted Modern Band programming by making it an official part of their music programs and by working closely with Little Kids Rock to help make Modern Band available to children throughout their school systems. Additional partner districts include the Chicago Public Schools, Dallas Independent School District, and Hartford Public Schools.

A large number of colleges and universities that train music teachers are now offering their students methods courses that focus in part or entirely on Modern Band, ensuring that the next generation of music educators are trained to teach Modern Band before they enter service.
