Our Methodology

Modern Band

Little Kids Rock has invented an entirely new kind of school music program called modern band. It teaches kids to perform, improvise and compose using the popular styles that they know and love including rock, pop, reggae, hip hop, R&B, and other modern styles. Modern band classes feature guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, vocals, and technology.

Our modern band programs leverage the cultural capital of the children we serve. They also expand upon existing music programming such as Marching Band, Jazz Band and Chorus, making music available to children who might otherwise not participate in traditional music classes.

A number of our partner districts, including the nation’s two largest public school systems, the New York City Department of Education and the Los Angeles Unified School District, as well as the Dallas Independent School District, the Chicago Public Schools, and the Hartford Public Schools have officially adopted modern band programming by making it an official part of their music programs and by working closely with Little Kids Rock to help make modern band available to children throughout their school systems.

Several colleges and universities that train music teachers are now offering their students methods courses that focus in part or entirely on modern band.

Music as a Second Language®

Little Kids Rock empowers and inspires youth using a revolutionary new teaching method called Music as a Second Language®. This student-centered approach to music education teaches children to play the popular musical styles they know and love, including rock, reggae, hip-hop, pop and also to improvise and compose their own original music. The Music as a Second Language® method was developed by our Founder & CEO, Dave Wish.

Dave’s decade-long public school teaching career was in the field of bilingual education. Drawing upon what is known about how children learn language, he developed a unique approach to teaching music that utilizes the deeply interconnected nature of language and music. “Just as all kids are natural language speakers,” says Dave, “they are also natural music makers. Not just some kids; all kids.”

More than 5,000 public school teachers have been trained in the Music as a Second Language® method since 2002, and these teachers have used it in the service of more than 1,000,000 children grades K-12. This makes Music as a Second Language® one of the most broadly used and fastest growing methods of teaching music in the U.S. public schools today.
