The Annual Little Kids Rock Benefit event brings together artists and individuals who are passionate about bringing the transformational gift of music to children in public schools across the US.
At our eighth annual benefit concert, Smokey Robinson and Kenny Loggins shared how music changes lives. We were also treated to appearances by Sam Moore, Tracy Morgan, Paul Shaffer, Nathan Sykes, the cast of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s School of Rock – The Musical, Tom Papa, Little Kids Rock students and many others.
“Robinson, for one, seconds that emotion. “Little Kids Rock is an organization that’s after my own heart because I’m an advocate for the arts being in schools,” he told PEOPLE just before the ceremony at New York City’s elegant Capitale.”
Our seventh annual benefit concert featured special guests and performers Steve Miller, Graham Nash, Paul Shaffer, David Letterman, Darlene Love, Pentatonix’s Kirstin Maldonado, Maureen Van Zandt and Little Kids Rock students and others.
“…it was a desire to give the gift of musical expression to disadvantaged kids that brought the crowd together. ‘We all know the situation,” said Miller. ‘We should never let arts be the first thing that gets cut.’”
Our sixth annual benefit concert featured special guests and performers Joan Jett, Alice Cooper, Billie Joe Armstrong, Jake Clemons, Cheap Trick, Mike Ness of Social Distortion, Little Kids Rock students and many others.
“[Jett]… tells Billboard she’s stayed active in Little Kids Rock because she loves watching the charitable efforts pay off. ‘You wanna see kids’ eyes light up? One year I went to the school when they brought the box [of instruments] and it was like Christmas.’ ”
The fifth Little Kids Rock annual benefit featured special guests and performers Darlene Love, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, Elvis Costello, Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers and others.
“Darlene Love showcased her high-voltage talents [and said] ‘Seeing the kids’ faces light up and the joy they get out of making music’ keeps ‘your energy level up,’ …”
The fourth Little Kids Rock annual benefit featured special guests and performers Steven Van Zandt, Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, Dion, Darlene Love, Rueben Blades and others.
“Bruce Springsteen made a surprise appearance at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom last night… Steven Van Zandt [said].‘You watch these kids’ eyes light up when you hand them a guitar.’”
The third Little Kids Rock annual benefit featured special guests and performers Lady Gaga, Maureen and Steven Van Zandt, Billy Squier, Little Kids Rock students and others.
“Van Zandt told Billboard.com … ‘By causing teachers to be obsessed with testing, they ended up cutting all the arts classes and killing music in our schools. Every statistic says a kid who takes music class does better in math and science. We’re the only country in the world that thinks art is a luxury. It’s not a luxury; it’s a necessity of life.’”
