How it works
Little Kids Rock partners with public school districts in some of the nation’s most economically disadvantaged communities with the goal of ensuring that all students (K-12) have access to an engaging, relevant and fun music education program. As the nation’s leading nonprofit provider of free music instruction and instruments to public schools, Little Kids Rock has changed the lives of nearly 250,000 children.
School teachers can apply for Little Kids Rock’s free (and fun!) two-day workshops, where they will meet other music and general education teachers from their district and learn how to teach music the Little Kids Rock way. The program focuses on popular music styles that most students already listen to, including rock, blues, rap and hip-hop. Heavy emphasis is put on composition, improvisation and recording, and kids regularly get to record their own music, create CDs – even make their own rock videos, which teachers can share on the Little Kids Rock teacher community website – The Hang.
After their training is complete, teachers receive a donation of curricula and resources, including all of the instruments necessary to run a rockin’ music program right in their schools!
One of the things that makes Little Kids Rock so successful is that after the training, teachers can have the program up and running quickly and at no cost to the school. We build on the expertise and skills of music teachers and give schools the flexibility to offer classes within the core curriculum or as an after-school enrichment program. Because all instruments are free, all kids have the chance to learn, play and rock out!
