frequently asked questions

What kind of experience are you looking for in a mentor?
It is not necessary to have any prior teaching experience on your instrument. Although we encourage experienced teachers to get involved, we also provide support and training to novice teachers. Enthusiasm, patience and commitment are what we most value in our mentors.

How well must I be able to play my instrument?
One need not be a particularly advanced player to be a successful music mentor. Though the skills we look for vary from instrument to instrument, as a rule, only a basic competency is required. For example, we have had very successful guitar mentors who could do little more than play eight to ten basic chords. Remember that our students are quite young (ages 5-12) and that we go to great lengths to match each teacher with an appropriate class.

What kind of time commitment does being a mentor require?
Mentors meet with their class for approximately one hour a week. The lessons are given for the duration of the school year. This translates to about 30-35 lessons during the course of a school year. Mentors are also asked to attend a bi-monthly organizational meeting. These are the minimum time commitments. Of course, there are many other opportunities to support the organizaiton as well.
