Famed Bassist Delivers Instruments To Disadvantaged NYC Schoolchildren, Joins Little Kids Rock Honorary Board
Jon E. Gee takes a break from touring with John Mellencamp to visit with elementary school students that take part in the Little Kids Rock music program.
New York, NY Feb. 15, 2011 — While budget cuts are eliminating public schools' music programs in New York and nationwide, legendary bassist Jon E. Gee is doing something about it.
On Thursday, February 17th, the musician will visit one of the 76 NYC classrooms that receive free instruments and curriculum from a national nonprofit called Little Kids Rock. Gee will present the class with a brand new electric bass and amp that Little Kids Rock will donate, give a guest lesson to the students, and accept a seat on the charity's honorary board, which already includes notable artists like Bonnie Raitt, Paul Simon, B.B. King and Slash.
"Little Kids Rock's work is so important," says Gee. "All children deserve the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument, whether they are from an affluent neighborhood or not."
In addition to inspiring this class of Little Kids Rock students, Gee is raising money for the nonprofit organization to provide this same opportunity to other schools across the country. He will make the first contribution himself and then call for his fans to follow suit.
Gee's career has taken him all over the world, and he has shared the stage with various acts including Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, The Who, Ted Nugent, Billy Joel, David Bowe and currently with John Mellencamp.
