Modern Band Symposium

In July of 2014, the inaugural Modern Band Symposium was held at Colorado State University’s campus in Fort Collins and featured Higher Education professionals and Arts Supervisors from more than two dozen public school districts and universities from around the United States. They discussed, presented and debated the the inclusion and growth if Modern Band in the U.S. public schools.

Join us this July as we convene the best and brightest thought leaders from around the country to transform the field of music education, further the Modern Band Movement, and unlock children’s inner music-makers. See you there!

What is Modern Band?

Modern Band is providing school districts with a new and more engaging way of bringing music-making opportunities to young people! This new genre-based, instrumental and vocal music program focuses on contemporary music genres like rock, pop and hip hop.

Pioneered by national nonprofit Little Kids Rock, Modern Band has already enriched the lives of more than 325,000 students in 1700 public schools across the United States and has quickly moved to the forefront of music education. It has already been incorporated into regular school day music programs in some of the nation’s largest public school systems including Los Angeles, Chicago and New York City.

“The fact is that “Modern Band” is the fifth stream of music education – we have Concert Band, we have Orchestra, we have Choir, we have Jazz Band-but there has not been, to date, a stream of Modern Band, i.e. popular music that takes its place at the table with its own curriculum and its own repertoire… and it has national repercussions and national possibilities for the shape of music and the future of music education,” said Barbara Murray, Director of Music for the NYC Department of Education.

Modern Band also uses the distinct category of instruments on which these musical styles are created, including guitar, bass, drums, piano and technology, which are donated to districts at no cost.
